The RNLI
is urging more of its supporters to join the Great South West Walk,
which gets underway tomorrow (1 August) and help raise the vital funds
needed to keep the charity afloat. Many have already signed up for the month
long event that will include 35 walks over 31 days and will support 3
charities.
The
Great South West Walk is being organised by the Western Morning News
and will raise funds
for the RNLI in the south west, Macmillan Cancer Support and Wooden Spoon.
There are 35 walks to choose from, each designed so they can be tackled by
most reasonably fit walkers.
The route
starts tomorrow with two walks covering an area from Plymouth to Bigbury-on-Sea.
From then on the event takes walkers towards the Dorset Coast. On day 14 the
route jumps from Dorset to Minehead and then leads in daily walks, down the
north coast, around Lands End and back up to Plymouth. The final days
activity is on Friday 31 August and will cover the route from Portwrinkle to
Plymouth.
Alan Tarby,
RNLI Coxswain at Padstow, says it’s a healthy and enjoyable way to see the
coastline protected by the RNLI’s ring of safety:
‘There are
times when I and my volunteer crew are at sea in howling winds and big seas,
and we wish we were on the coast path! The views are always magnificent,
wherever you are and whatever the weather. They remind us why were are so
lucky to live in the south west and why the sea plays such a large part in
all our lives. But it also illustrates why the coast can be a treacherous
place and why we need a charity like the RNLI to provide help for those who
get caught out on the water.’
‘The RNLI
relies on public donations to ensure it’s volunteers have the very best
lifeboats, equipment and training. I know we ask a lot of our supporters,
but I hope you can see the benefits of this request. Please walk a part of
the coastline so I can continue to save lives around it.’
